Sequential photographs of a man sprinting by Eadweard Muybridge, 1887
Eadweard Muybridge, A man sprinting, collotype, 1887. Wellcome Collection, 995769i. Public Domain Mark.

At first, a run is one action. In a sequence of photographs it becomes a set of positions: each image separate, each dependent on the next.

The Wellcome Collection identifies this collotype as A man sprinting, after Eadweard Muybridge, dated 1887. It belongs to his Animal locomotion series and bears plate number 59.

Look across the sequence rather than at a single frame. The image asks us to reconstruct movement from intervals. That is our reading of the plate: a reminder that athletic action can become a visual language through repetition.

Object record and public-domain image: Wellcome Collection — A man sprinting. Interpretation: BENI HASAN.
